Like a Pro Cover

When I first decided to become a professional photographer I was astonished by the things that I didn’t know and the terminology that was unfamiliar to me.  Much of this was the result of the advancement of digital technology.  There are many aspects of digital photography that were not a part of film photography or were handled differently.  For example, Color Space is a fairly recent concept that applies to digital images and although ISO is a carry-over from the days of film photography it is easier to manage with digital technology.

Another term that came up frequently was RAW. I read about a dozen books on digital photography before I discovered what it means.  In retrospect, I could have easily found a definition through Wikipedia but at the time I had no idea where to look.

As I moved from film photography to digital, I kept notes on what I had learned.  Digital Photography Like a Pro! is based on those notes.  Its purpose is to save others from the long and frustrating process that I experienced.

Any serious photographer will eventually learn everything in this book. You have an opportunity to learn it quickly and easily in just a few hours.

With very little time and effort you can be well on your way to taking better pictures consistently – shooting Like a Pro! Properly EXPOSING your images by confidently adjusting APERTURE, SHUTTER SPEED, and ISO will no longer be sources of stress. Photography Equipment and Editing Software will lose their mystique, and your confidence will be greatly enhanced.

Mastering Exposure Cover

Arguably, the most intimidating aspect of photography, for most people, is the Aperture setting.

Because of this, many people buy expensive cameras and use them like point-and-shoot cameras. They never go beyond the automatic settings.

Although the automatic settings on many digital cameras produce very impressive photos, the true art of photography comes from mastering manual settings.  When you control Aperture and Shutter Speed yourself rather than depending on the camera, you begin to understand how the various settings interact and relate to each other.

Mastering Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO and Exposure will take the intimidation out of manual settings.  Once you understand the Exposure Triangle and how factors interact you will know how to handle tricky lighting situations and optimize normal situations.

Your learning will be enhanced and accelerated by the numerous images and charts that are used to explain key concepts.

DP 101

Mastering Digital Cameras is the first book in a three-part series written with beginners in mind.

By this, I mean that these books are quite comprehensive but they do not assume any prior knowledge of photography or photographic terminology.

In this first book, you will learn something about the history of cameras and how digital photography evolved from film photography.  You will gain insight into the inner workings of cameras of all types and sizes.  You will begin to understand what is universal and what is unique to individual cameras.  This information should help you make better purchase decisions.

If you are not familiar with DSLR cameras, you will be and you will understand why these are the cameras of choice for most professional photographers.

One of the things that make DSLRs so popular and versatile is their ability to change lenses.

Mastering Digital Cameras has a rather comprehensive chapter on interchangeable lenses.  This chapter addresses the various types of lenses and when to use them.

A brief chapter on exposure and another on miscellaneous topics of interest round out the discussion of digital cameras.  At this point you will have a strong foundation for understanding the Art of Photography which will be the second book of the series.  The third and final book of the series will address photo editing software.

FF series 3D

Finely Focused Photography Books is a series of books from Al Judge for people who prefer to study photography one topic at a time.

Each Book of the Series draws upon Al’s longer and more comprehensive books for content. Like all of Al Judge’s books these books contain numerous photos and illustrations to help facilitate clear and concise communication.

These books will:

Save you a great deal of time and effort.
Help you take better pictures and know why they are better.
Present the details and language of digital photography without intimidation or confusing terminology – all terms are clearly defined and explained.

FF1 Understanding Digital Cameras

Understanding Digital Cameras will painlessly provide help and insight into the world of Digital Cameras and provide a strong foundation for mastering digital photography.

Digital Cameras don’t have to be intimidating. The underlying principles are surprisingly simple but rarely presented in layman’s terms. Like any other area of specialization, photography has its own language. Fortunately, you only need to understand a few of terms and concepts to get started.

This guide to PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS builds a solid foundation of photographic knowledge with easy-to-follow discussions of everything that you need to know in order to get started with confidence. Every photographic term used in the book is clearly defined and thoroughly explained. All terms are also highlighted by using BOLD CAPS so that you can easily find them again to refresh your memory.

This Photographic Guide will take the mystery out of digital cameras, camera choices, and Photographic Jargon.

This book is filled with charts, illustrations and photos that take the discussion to new levels. You will not only understand the terminology and techniques discussed, but you will have a much better understanding of how your camera works and what is actually happening when you make adjustments. The charts and photos should help you to retain what you learn and put it to good use immediately.

Although this book provides a fast-track approach to achieving photographic competence it does not rely on previous knowledge.

FF2 Before You Buy

Before You Buy a Digital Camera is the second book of the series.  Using the first book as a foundation, this book explores your options in digital cameras from point-and-shoot costing less than $150 to medium and large format cameras that often sell for $50,000 and more.

Digital Cameras are divided into five categories and each category is discussed before comparing features and capabilities of each category.

If you are considering purchasing a new camera, this guide will help you to sort through your choices and give you confidence in your selection.  Without some basic knowledge, this task can be overwhelming and confusing.

If you decide to purchase your first DSLR, thjis guidebook offers a good deal of basic information about key features and what is most important.  Many people are surprised to learn that Megapixels alone don't determine image quality.  You need to understand your options in sensor size to make your best decision.

Like the other books in this series, this book provides a fast-track approach to achieving photographic competence but it does not rely on previous knowledge.

FF3 Lenses

If you are serious about photography, you will spend far more on lenses than cameras.  You will also use lenses for decades while cameras will be replaced and upgraded.  With this in mind, lens choices are serious business.

For most photographers, a lens is the first upgrade in equipment.  A good lens can make a relatively inexpensive camera look great.  Most professionals will tell you that talented photographers can create great images with inexpensive equipment, but all will agree that a lens can have a dramatic effect on the end result.

If you have never owned a DSLR, it would be wise to understand "Kit" lenses before making your purchase.  It may save you quite a bit of money in the short term.

Understanding DSLR Lenses will help you to decipher the code written on every interchangeable lens.  There are several components to the code and each manufacturer uses slightly differnt codes.  If you understand your choices from one manufacturer, it is easy to understand another.

This book is filled with charts, illustrations and photos that bring order to chaos in this sometimes bewildering topic.

Like the other books in this series, this book provides a fast-track approach to achieving photographic competence but it does not rely on previous knowledge.

FF4 Aperture

Understanding Aperture & f-stops will painlessly provide help and insight into the use of manual camera settings and provide a strong foundation for mastering digital photography.

Digital Cameras don’t have to be intimidating. The underlying principles are surprisingly simple but rarely presented in layman’s terms. Like any other area of specialization, photography has its own language. Fortunately, you only need to understand a few terms and concepts to get started.

Aperture is probably your most important setting.  Before you even press the shutter release button, your aperture setting has determined how much of your image will be in sharp focus and how much will be blurred.  This is known as depth of field.  Landscape images should be as sharp as possible but portraits should have a blurred background so that it does not compete with the object of the portrait.

There is nothing new here except the way in which the material is presented.  Numerous images and charts are used to take the mystery out of f-stops.  Most people are confused by the fact that high f-stop numbers  indicate small apertures.  Once you understand that f-stops are merely fractions, it all makes a lot more sense.

Although this book provides a fast-track approach to achieving photographic competence it does not rely on previous knowledge.

FF5 Shutter Speed

Shutter Speed is another manual setting that allows the photographer to achieve some interesting effects.

A slow shutter speed can be used at night for "light Painting" or during the day to make people and things-in-motion disappear.  You can acheive a sense of movement while still producing a tack sharp stationary image.

A fast shutter speed, on the other hand, can freeze action or show a sharp image against a blurred and streaked background to portray movement.

The Artistic Use of Shutter Speed will stimulate your creativity and  give you a sense of what is possible.  The effects can be quite dramatic.

Shutter Speed and Aperture are the two items that need to be balnaced to achieve proper exposure.  Once you understand how they relate, you are well on your way to creating some outstanding images.

Although this book provides a fast-track approach to achieving photographic competence it does not rely on previous knowledge.

FF6 Exposure

Mastering Exposure presents a varity of tools that can be used to evaluate and adjust exposure.

Photography is about recording how light enhances images.  Mastery of this topic separates great photographers from the masses.  Exposure Zones was one of Ansel Adams most significant contributions to photography.  This system provided a template for how digital cameras measure and evaluate color and tone to achieve better images.

Photo-Editing software like Photoshop and Lightroom can work wonders with most photos, but can do even more with a sharp and properly exposed image.  With Camera RAW an image can actually improve when over-exposed and then adjusted in Lightroom or similar software.  The more you understand Exposure, the more likely you will create some exceptional images.

Numerous charts and illustrations help to communicate the basic concept of exposure and reduce the intimidation factor.

Like all the other books in this series, while this book provides a fast-track approach to achieving photographic competence it does not rely on previous knowledge.

Sedona is known for its beautiful and awe inspiring Red Rock formations.  If you have never been to Sedona, this book will give you a good idea of why people flock here from all over the world.

Impressions Jerome

Jerome is a former mining town about 25 miles from Sedona.  For many years it has been a very popular day trip for Sedona Tourists, but it is now becoming a vacation destination in its own right.  It is currently a town of about 450 people perched on a hill over looking the Verde Valley.  The view is expansive.  On most days you can see the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff and Williams Mountain to its West.  Both are snowcapped much of the year.

Besides learning about mining and the lifestyle of the thousands of miners who once lived in this tiny town, you will be treated to great restaurants, shopping, and art galleries.

In this book, I tried to capture the architecture and oddities without the hundreds of people who usually wander the streets.  Most of these images were capture early in the morning before the shops open.  People become the subject of photos of Jerome later in the day.

Impressions Public Art

One of the things that I love about Sedona is the ever present art.  There are numerous galleries in Sedona but there are also scultures all over town.  Some are for sale and others are public property.  In either case, anyone visiting Sedona is treated to an incredible outdoor art experience even if they never visit a gallery.

Photographing Art is always challenging, because the photographer adds another layer of artistry to the object by the lighting, composition, background and point of perspective.  I hope that my images do justice to these wonderful art objects.
